Happy Birthday, Slash!

Friday • July 23,  2010   7:38:22 PM

We’d like to send our happiest birthday wishes to Slash, who has a birthday today, July 23. The Chapeaued Shredder turns 45 today (looking good, man!).

The former Guns N’ Roses guitarist, once and future Velvet Revolver member and current solo artist has had a busy year so far. In March, Slash released his first-ever solo album – titled, simply, Slash – on which he collaborated with many of his GN’R pals (Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, Steven Adler) as well as some of the best-known voices in rock (Ozzy Osbourne, Kid Rock, Iggy Pop). Since releasing the record he’s been on a world tour with his solo band, which features vocalist Myles Kennedy from Alter Bridge.

Earlier this year, Slash and Gibson Guitar partnered up to release the Slash Appetite Les Paul and the Slash Appetite for Destruction Les Paul Custom. The axes are both based on the instrument that Slash used to record landmark tracks such as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine” and “Paradise City” on Guns N’ Roses’ 1987 album, Appetite for Destruction.

For those of you who want to achieve Slash’s signature tone on his signature guitars, last month, Gibson.com revealed some of his tone secrets – via Slash’s personal guitar tech, Chet Haun.

And, just this week, the birthday boy talked to Gibson.com about collaborating with Jerry Lee Lewis, getting pushed while on stage in Italy and searching for a new singer for Velvet Revolver.

Slash ,the best GNR guitarist ever, all the others are hired hands and stupid emos.

They need 2 players to play the solo of scom and nov rain, what a shame.

No Birthday's. tour news. We want information about the next album.

7/24/2010 | 6:23:20 PM by Travis

AxlGnrFans1974

Thanks for the info ! Looks like Azoff met his match and Axl isn't going to back down from the damage Azoff has done to the Gunner's. At least it's the lawyers going at it, not Axl and Azoff. I was told from a contact that he did not know about a concert of Guns N' Roses till two days before the concert and was not aware it was posted on the internet.

7/24/2010 | 6:35:04 PM by Travis

I'm not going to be rude and will say Happy Belated B-day ! Just count your blessings that you are still alive and being you were given a second chance at life to switch your negetiveness of the past to a positive. You were a Gunner at one time dude, time to be proud of it not down about it !

7/24/2010 | 7:09:19 PM by Travis

You were the best guitarist Guns has ever seen. The replacements have failed miserably!!!

7/25/2010 | 2:42:48 AM by Travis

I think Axl should re-record Chinese Democracy with the current band.

7/25/2010 | 3:46:56 AM by The Real Travis

the other Travis-

Not a good idea. G n' R need to do a new album with the present line-up to bond the band as one.

@ Nova Rock

It don't matter how we make it 'cause it always ends the same,
You can push it for more mileage but your flaps are wearing thin,
And I could sleep on it till morning but this nightmare never ends.

7/25/2010 | 10:40:15 AM by Horner

Slash brings down all the guitarists after broke up,maybe only buckethead could be in the same level.

All the others bbf, fortus, finck, ashba they are a bunch of stupid emo guitarists that doesnt stuck in gnr profile.

7/25/2010 | 10:58:29 AM by Nova Rock

@PennyLane

It don't really matter. Gonna find out for yourself. U tell them stories they'd rather believe. Use an confuse them. They are numb and naive. You don't know why I won't act the way you think I should. You know that I got you under my skin.

7/25/2010 | 12:08:09 PM by Aussie Scott

G'day PennyLane,

Nice to see your name appear. Hope you are well and life is treating you kindly :)

7/25/2010 | 12:15:21 PM by PennyLane

@ Nova Rock

I tried so hard just to get through to you
But your head's so far
from the realness of truth
Was it just a come on in the dark
Wasn't meant to last long
I think you've worn your welcome honey
I'll just see you along as I sing you this song

7/25/2010 | 12:20:08 PM by PennyLane

Hey Aussie Scott, how are you?
Life's been real good, got blessed with a beautiful boy who's keeping me pretty busy. But I try to keep up to date on GnR related topics. Hope all is well with you too!
:)

7/25/2010 | 12:41:02 PM by Captainbeard

How has this thread turned into an attempt for Penny Lane and Nova Rock to "e-bang" each other using CD lyrics?!

7/25/2010 | 1:10:01 PM by Nova Rock

@PennyLane

You like to hurt me you know that you do. You like to think in some way that's me and not you. But we know that isn't true. U like to have me jump and be good but I...don't want to do it.

7/25/2010 | 1:28:38 PM by SWOC

Slash was asked in one of interviews will he agree with those Fans who claim that Axl Rose destroys the great legacy of GnR using their brand name. Slash answered that he doesn't have anything in common with this band anymore so he does't want to judge Rose.

No comments at the moment.

7/25/2010 | 4:25:35 PM by AxlGnrFans1974

Nova Rock......well huh.....sad.

7/25/2010 | 5:13:47 PM by Nova Rock

@AGNRF 1974

Shut up asshole! Does anyone asked u for ur comment?

7/25/2010 | 5:18:53 PM by Travis

SWOC-

There's a vid on YT of that from Slash. Slash has changed some and has realized the problems he has created with all his negetiveness. Geepers, what happened to his childhood growing up that craeted Slash to be so negetive about life ! Drugs-drinking which almost killed him ! I think the reason Slash isn't going to judge Axl is as Axl stated that Chi-Dem was just an album. Everybody thinks that Axl spent $14 million on just Chi-Dem is wrong. It's from all the music that has been worked on.

7/25/2010 | 8:19:52 PM by PennyLane

I know the things you wanted

7/26/2010 | 1:43:27 AM by Travis

Slash's solos from SCOM, NR, Coma, WTTJ, Estranged, Don't Cry - hell all his guitar solos from AFD-UYI's are some of the very best in all of rock music.

I personally think Estranged, Yesterdays and Since I Don't Have You are underrated.

7/26/2010 | 2:55:03 AM by Aussie Scott

I'd have to agree Travis. Slash's solos are amazing. Each solo is unique, suits the particular song perfectly and sound incredible. He is one of the very best of all time as far as I'm concerned.

Congratulations PennyLane ! Is this your first baby?

7/26/2010 | 3:06:53 AM by Travis

Slash had an amazing ability to find the right note, the right chord, the right part for every GNR song.

I love the winding, twisting, ever-changing guitar in Estranged. Great background info on the song on the making of the video.

I love the interplay of Slash's guitar and Axl's vocals in Coma. The battle, co-exist, partner and ultimately find harmony throughout.

Axl and Slash were the perfect duo.

7/26/2010 | 6:45:49 AM by The real Travis

the other Travis-

Most of those solos were already finished before Slash became a Guns N' Roses band member. The 1st line up to play those songs were Axl, Izzy, Tracii, Ole' & Rob and they played two gigs as Guns N' Roses in 1985. The 2nd line up was Axl, Izzy, Tracii, Rob and Duff and they did a live show April 11, 1985 as Guns N' Roses and 3rd line up is as we were familiar with which is the 3rd line up was Axl, Izzy, Duff, Slash & Steven and their 1st gig was June 6, 1985. Peace out !

7/26/2010 | 8:54:12 AM by PennyLane

Thanks Aussie Scott, first baby, whole new world, lol.

What I love most about Slash's solos, besides what you already mentioned, is that I can really feel them, there's so much heart and soul (Saul, haha) in it. Can't describe it any better but I hope you know what I mean.

7/26/2010 | 11:15:14 AM by Aussie Scott

Haha PennyLane - your'e so right, it is a whole new world. I've got a 6 yr old boy and a nearly 2 yr old girl, its hard work but very rewarding :) My children love Axl and GnR as much as I do, its so funny seeing them groovin' to 'Better' !

And I totally know what you mean about feeling Slash's solos... Thats the beauty of his partnering with Axl. Slash's feel in the guitar work and Axl's amazing and beautiful lyrics and singing...

7/26/2010 | 1:18:27 PM by PennyLane

@Aussie Scott

its hard work but very rewarding - that sums it up perfectly! :)
Haha, I can imagine yours rocking out to GnR, that's so cool! My son's 6 months today,so he has no preference as of now but he's definitely a little rocker already, lol.

So true, Slash and Axl created some magic together that will stay forever. Both can be so proud of that.

7/26/2010 | 3:19:28 PM by WATT

- the real travis

"Most of those solos were already finished before Slash became a Guns N' Roses band member."

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. It is sad, because you take such a big place.

7/26/2010 | 5:47:30 PM by SWOC

Travis,

I think you're right about "CD" and the reason why Slash gives such an answer. I'm waiting for the same question after the day when next album from NuGnR camp will be realised. Wonder if there is a chance for deja vu.

7/26/2010 | 11:16:07 PM by Izzy

@ WATT - you are absolutely right. "Real" Travis has no idea what he is talking about.

If you read his posts, he tries to minimize Slash's input in the band. And whenever Axl fails, he puts some odd spin on it, citing his "sources."

Any real GNR fans knows the solos in Coma and Estranged were written by Slash. That is also true for the SCOM of mine, Yesterdays, Don't Cry, Novermber Rain, Welcome to the Jungle, Yesterdays and Since I Don't Have You and every other song referenced by Travis and Aussie Scott.

Slash wrote those guitar solos and the guitar parts along with Izzy, Duff and maybe Axl.

Any other version is a lie. I dare anyone to find a credible quote or "source" that supports Real Travis' idiotic claim: "Most of those solos were already finished before Slash became a Guns N' Roses band member."

7/26/2010 | 11:18:40 PM by Foolish

"Most of those solos were already finished before Slash became a Guns N' Roses band member."

@ real Travis - what a foolish and stupid thing to say. Seriously? The solos in Coma and Estranged were written in 1985???

Give me a break. You have no idea what you are talking about.

That is blatantly incorrect. You are making up nonsense.

7/27/2010 | 1:04:13 AM by The Real Travis

Izzy- & Foolish-
Re-read my comment ! What did I say ! My first word was MOST and you over looked it ! Who's stupid for not paying attention !

SWOC-
I do have that feeling but I think DaJaVu is going to more like ripping our faces off !

7/27/2010 | 1:57:15 AM by Frank

@ Izzy & Foolish

The Real Travis is accuarte ! Does anyone keep up with the Rolling Stone articles ! You'll find the answer dated back in 1985. I searched for it and found it and so should you !

7/27/2010 | 3:01:05 AM by Travis

Most of the lyrics and vocal parts were written by Slash and Izzy. Axl just sang them.

7/27/2010 | 3:27:42 AM by Fact Check

Anything Goes was originally "My Way, Your Way" and was written by Izzy, Rose and Chris Weber. This was a Hollywood Rose song but you can hear how different it was when Slash took over.

Welcome to the Jungle - Axl wrote the lyrics and Slash wrote the music.

Its So Easy was written by Duff and West Arkeen.

Nightrain was written by Rose and Stradlin.

Out ta Get Me - lyrics by Rose and music by Slash and Stradlin.

Mr. Brownstone was written by Slash and Izzy.

Paradise City - lyrics by Slash & Axl, music by Slash, Izzy & Rose.

My Michelle was written by Axl and Izzy.

Think About You was written by Izzy.

Sweet Child O' Mine - Axl wrote the lyrics upstairs while listening to music composed by Slash, Izzy and Duff.

Rocket Queen - Slash and Duff wrote the music and Axl added lyrics.

You're Crazy - Slash and Izzy wrote the music and Axl wrote the lyrics.

7/27/2010 | 4:08:19 AM by Frank

@ Fact Check

Look for the double CD gift box of prior Guns called "Attitude For Destruction." Alot of those songs you mentioned were already composed, they were just re-done and re-recorded with a different sound.

7/27/2010 | 4:12:16 AM by Guitar God

Slash is a Guitar God. Right up there with BB King, Chuck Berry, Vaughn, Angus, Van Halen and Jimmy Paige.

Obviously Travis and Frank are the same person. The suggestion that Slash didn't write all those guitar solos is funny, but not true.

If it were, then Axl Rose, the owner of GNR Trademark, has been stealing royalties for a long time.

In 50 years everyone will remember Slash and his solos. In 5 years nobody will care about DJ Tanner or Bumbleface. Hell, DJ didn't even play on Chinese, he's just some guy who needed a job and didn't mind being Axl's 19th guitarist.

7/27/2010 | 4:14:25 AM by Jay

@ Fact Check-

Double check yourself; I recall reading years ago Duff saying that he penned most of the lyrics for Paradise City. Axl got ahold of it and added his own thing and rearranged some other stuff, but ultimately the hook is as Duff conceived it.

7/27/2010 | 4:16:34 AM by Jay

@ PennyLane-

Congrats on the baby! Mine just turned 1 year old last week and started walking about a week prior to that. What an adventure it's been so far!

7/27/2010 | 4:21:25 AM by Blue Moon

@ Frank AKA Travis -

Attitude for Destruction? Seriously? If anything that proves how much Slash wrote.

Killing Time?

My Way Your Way?

This is your proof that Slash didn't write those solos? Seriously man.

7/27/2010 | 4:28:12 AM by Fact Check

@ Jay - you could be right. Seems every member has a spin on how the songs were written.

Do you believe the solos and guitar parts were already in place and Slash just copied 'em, as Travis states?

7/27/2010 | 4:41:08 AM by The Real Travis

Whoever Frank is - is Frank and whoever aka: Travis is seems like they gave ya all something to look for that we all are missing. I am going to look up material of Attitude For Destruction, if there is material, I will post the websight.

7/27/2010 | 4:42:13 AM by appetite

slash is the greatest guitarist ever. axl is the greatest frontman ever. izzy was the glue and duff the polish

bumblefoot, ashja, these guys are just pretenders

7/27/2010 | 5:07:45 AM by The Real Travis

SHIT !!!!! There is a double CD called Attitude For Destruction ! I checked out the music and from the sound of voices. Roger Daughtery, Teddy Zig-Zag, Tracii Guns, Gilbey Clarke ! Some of the sonngs mentioned are on there from way back. From what I can gather from some of the sights I read, well shit, go to the websight, Attitude For Destruction. There's also a movie called Attitude For Destruction. Something was mentioned about Hollywood Rose.

7/27/2010 | 5:17:44 AM by Jay

@ Fact Check-

Haven't heard the old Hollywood Rose versions, so I really don't know. If I had to take a stab in the dark, my guess is that Slash's solos are probably similar (although likely better) than the HR demos. Although I'm more of an Axl fanboy than Slash fanboy, I can't deny the guy's style and talent. Ultimately, I think that Slash needs Axl back, because I think that their writing partnership forced Slash to be a little bit more of a perfectionist in terms of writing (have you heard VR or his new shit?? It's good, but not great like he used to do). And on the flipside, I think that Axl needs Slash back as well, because I think that their writing partnership forced Axl to let go of his perfectionism, just a little bit (have you heard his new shit?? It's good, but come the fuck on, dude; 14 years and $13million....).

7/27/2010 | 5:26:01 AM by Jay

@ (real) Travis-

Dude, they got that Attitude for Destruction thing down at Best Buy. Although it looks interesting, I have little to no interest in hearing Gilby and Zig-Zag with various vocalists I don't really care about doing covers of GNR tunes. There's only like 3 or 4 actual Guns (or Hollywood Rose) recordings on it featuring Axl or anybody else I might remotely care to hear. Not gonna spend $15 on it. If you wanna buy it and end up not liking it, mail it to me and I'll give 'er a spin (that's probably the only way I'll ever hear it). If I wanna hear poor quality recordings of Axl with some dudes that aren't what most consider to be "original members", I've got lots of Chinese Democracy demos I can go back to. Just my .02

7/27/2010 | 5:30:49 AM by Brom Bones

Jay, that was one of the most balanced, reasonable posts I've read on this board.

The only thing I would add is that there are no HR versions of WTTJ, PC, Mr.B, SCOM, Nightrain etc. Those songs didn't exist until Slash joined the band. Anything Goes is one of the few remaining songs from HR.

I appreciate you are an Axl fan and respect that. I can't respect some of the fools on here who try to minimize or diminish Slash's impact and importance in the band. It is silly. Slash was as big a contributor to Guns as Axl and Izzy, with Duff a few steps behind. Pretending Slash wasnt a driving factor is as silly as suggesting Axl wasn't a driving factor. The success of GNR, the songs, the lyrics, the music, all of it comes from the combination of Axl, Slash, Izzy and Duff. Take out Slash and there is no Guns. Take out Axl and there is no Guns.

7/27/2010 | 5:59:56 AM by Jay

@ Brom Bones-

Thanks, it's rare, but I have my moments.

7/27/2010 | 6:33:30 AM by Travis

@ Jay

Dude ! They are not covers !

7/27/2010 | 7:25:14 AM by Jay

Travis-

I don't have a copy of it in my hand, nor have I just as of this evening reviewed the tracklist online somewhere, but the cd I held in my hand at Best Buy had (for example), "It's So Easy; feat. Gilby Clarke and Tracii Guns". I forget if that's who actually was noted as being featured on that track, but in my book any re-recording of any song off AFD, Lies or UYI (think most or all on Attitude are AFD tunes) not sung by Axl and guitared by Slash, Izzy and Duff, as those were back in 1987, 1988 and 1991, respectively, qualifies as a "cover". Live shows aside, if Axl released the re-recorded version of Appetite that was allegedly done back in 1999, that would pretty much be a "cover" as well. This is all purely debatable to some extent, though, I will admit.

Now, the old Hollywood Rose demo recordings (and I think Anything Goes was the only one that showed up on Appetite), if that's what you're talking about, are not covers. Those are songs that Axl and Izzy and Duff took with them when Rob Gardener and Tracii Guns "pussied out" (as Duff put it) on the infamous Hell Tour. Know your Guns history!

7/27/2010 | 8:59:07 AM by Travis

@ Jay

Researched and also confided into a Guns freak who knows alot. As was told to me once again, Anything Goes, Paradise City, Sweet Child O' Mine, My Michelle, Mr. Brownstone & Welcome To The Jungle was played on Sunset Strip before Guns N' Roses became an actual band. As it was explained to me that the Attitude For Destruction is a Guns N' Roses tribute album.

7/27/2010 | 9:00:23 AM by 13[SlasHer]

damn, is the birthday party already over?? nah, i am a bit late...
@ Jay, well said dude, aware you are Axl fanboy, but I consider you are one of real GNR fans. Not just worshiping Axl and badmouthing the others ex-member... Well said man. Best regard.
Long live Guns N' Roses !

7/27/2010 | 11:50:34 AM by Ichabod Crane

Hats off to Jay. Nothing wrong with being an Axl fan. But there is something wrong with the warped posts we are seeing from Travis. To suggest that the songs on Appetite and UYI's were already written by Rose, Izzy and Traci, prior to Slash's arrival is absurd. But I understand why Travis does it. If he makes that argument, he can basically create the illusion that Slash was just a filler like Sorum, Gilby or Dizzy. Just a guitarist who added over already written material, not central to the band or its work. And by doing that Travis can glorify Axl further, make Slash small; make Axl bigger.

But any educated fan knows this is folly and madness. Like him or not, Slash was as big a part of those songs as Axl.

Further, it is an ill conceived argument to attack Slash in hopes of strengthening Axl. A better approach would be to pay Slash his due, and then argue Axl is great because he overcame the loss of Slash.

Travis, like Axl, has a hard time dealing with the fact that we all love Slash and talk about him, even 14 years after he left the band. Because in many ways it does weaken Axl and his legitimacy for using the name "Guns N' Roses."

Notice how Travis never criticizes Axl? Notice how he is singing the praises of DJ Ashba, a guitarist who has never written a note in GNR.

How objective and honest can you be when you degrade Slash and allege he was just re-writting guitar parts on completed songs, when that is nothing but a lie, but the complete an utter truth when applied to Ashba. Ashba is the one who is playing parts, a filler, just another guitarist.

Been reading some of these posts and getting kinda confused. I have been a GNR fan since they first started and I have to say that even though I love Ch. Dem. I also love the old GNR. Almost everyone, in the original band, as far as I can tell, contributed to putting out some kick ass tunes. Slash, back in the day, may have been f-cked up but so were they all and he could sure make the guitar sing. Now, I don't know what to think about him. Seems like he just kinda got to a certain point and then went, "Oh well, I don't want to challenge myself anymore." Would love to hear something new and original outta him, something all his own and unique. Hope the dude had a great B-day anyway. Later, Peace.

old school -

I've also have been reading these comments. I can't believe the train wreck here. I've made only a few comments and it looks like I'm everywhere on hre. If the imitator doesn't care for Slash, than the person should just come out and say so ! I don't care fr the things Slash has said and done and has forgot who he once was and put himself back into perspective, but that may be a trial and tribulation for him right now because I have noticed he is getting hit with the negetiveness of his past ! Peace Out Bro !

Re: 7/27/2010 | 8:59:07 AM by Travis

Sorry dude, but I still gotta take issue with this one. I spent the ages of 14-17 obsessing and researching and reading every article and interview I could get my fucking hands on, and 98% of what you just said about those tunes being played before Guns was Guns just don't add up.

Anything Goes is the only song, to my knowledge, that survived the Hollywood Rose days and became a Guns song. And although Axl has stated more than once that Don't Cry was the first ("official", if you will) song written under the banner name, Guns N' Roses (by Axl and Izzy, per liner note credits), I also distinctly remember reading an interview where he stated that Jungle was the first song that he and Slash wrote together, while in Seattle on the Hell Tour. Being from Seattle myself, this one stuck with me because he noted that Seattle and mainly how it reminded him of Los Angeles, albeit a little smaller, inspired the lyrics to the song. My Michelle was penned in the studio during the recording sessions for Appetite, for his friend, Michelle Young, whom had earlier in the day given him a ride to said studio and whilst along the way there Elton John's "Your Song" came on the radio and while they drove and listened to that song she happened to muse about how she wished somebody would write a song for/about her. This song is a direct product of that desire. Sweet Child was written during the Appetite studio sessions as well, although in a house somewhere in Hollywood where the band was staying (at the record company's expense, their manager at the time, Alan Niven had rented the house for them). If you read Slash's book, this situation regarding this particular house is mentioned in somewhat reasonable detail. Brownstone and Paradise City I'm a little fuzzy on, but am still quite certain that they were not written nor played live nor demo'd in any bands that Axl, Izzy, Steven, Slash or Duff were in or auditioned for or wanted to be in, prior to Guns N' Roses becoming Guns N' Roses, as the Appetite lineup would define.

I know two, no make that three things pretty fucking good, dude; Guns N' Roses, Ford Mustangs, and pussy. I am a self proclaimed enthusiast, conesseur, and near expert/idiot savant in each category. And after an eighteen year long affair with my near and dear friend, Mary Jane, I just quit blazing (not permanently, but for a little while, to "study" for a hopefully likely test) just a couple months ago so I'm feeling pretty fucking sharp at the moment. I can't promise or guarantee 100% accuracy to my statements, but you had better have your shit together if you're gonna pick "Guns N' Roses" as a topic from the Jeopardy! board when you have me as an opponent.

"Alex, I'll take Bad Obsession for $200, please."

7/28/2010 | 5:20:26 AM by Jay

And Travis, I'm not puttin' you down dude, just challenging your statements. I know you've been catching some shit on this thread, I'll leave that business to others.

7/28/2010 | 5:31:46 AM by Jay

"Oh well, I don't want to challenge myself anymore."

Old School, I couldn't have said it better. His playing is as technically proficient today as it ever was, but just doesn't seem to have the same soul and feel that it used to. I don't know how much that did or didn't have to do with Axl, but he sure seems to have lost more than a lead singer in recent years. All I can say about Slash's playing and in general the riffs and foundations that he puts together is that they just ain't the same since he disassociated himself with a certain overly obsessive, perfectionist, manic depressive, bi-polar, borderline psychopath whose name just seems to escape me. Either that, or he's one of those guys where the drugs and alcohol actually helped the creative process.

Jay-

Who ever is pretending to be me is having a hayday ! (7/27/2010 | 8:59:07 AM by Travis) I had to laugh at this one. I worked a split shift yesterday !

7/28/2010 | 7:38:14 AM by Jay

Well then that shithead needs to do his homework a little more before he starts acting like he knows what the fuck he's talking about! So I guess now that the poster formerly known as "Travis" will now be going by s.n. "The Real Travis", and who is now (just regular)"Travis" is some dick knuckle who couldn't even be bothered to come up with a screen name that wasn't already being used, eh? Some people's kids, man, I'm tellin' ya..... Well, Real Travis, at least you got an imposter that, although poorly informed and educated on some subjects, at least attempts to create legitimate dialogue instead of the usual "....like to suck cocks/I'm a big fag" routine. Anyway, screen name updates duly noted. This shit is giving me a headache......

7/28/2010 | 3:10:41 PM by Jay Real

@Jay You talking bullshits dude,stfu.

7/28/2010 | 4:06:10 PM by Headless Horseman

@ Jay

Your post regarding the authorship of the songs is correct. Travis' statement:

"Researched and also confided into a Guns freak who knows alot. As was told to me once again, Anything Goes, Paradise City, Sweet Child O' Mine, My Michelle, Mr. Brownstone & Welcome To The Jungle was played on Sunset Strip before Guns N' Roses became an actual band. As it was explained to me that the Attitude For Destruction is a Guns N' Roses tribute album."

is completely wrong. Another fabrication. Not an ounce of truth to it. As usual, Travis' sources are imaginary.

However, Jay, I could be wrong on this one but I thought SCOM was written in Chicago. Axl was upstairs listening to Slash and Co. play and wrote the lyrics.

I think Mr. Brownstone was written in the house you reference in Hollywood, by Izzy and Slash. According to Slash's book they were stuck in an area where the dealers wouldn't travel to, and they were lamenting being heroin addicts.

Paradise City I have no idea. You are correct about My Michelle, and I don't know about Nightrain or Its So Easy.

But I do know that Travis is full of it. Complete an utter nonsense. None of those songs were written or played before the Appetite band came together.

@ Travis - you owe everyone an apology for your repeated lies.

7/28/2010 | 4:08:18 PM by Headless Horseman

No, you are right Jay about SCOM, obviously not written in Chicago, I am thinking of the UYI's sessions in Chicago. The band were in Hollywood pre-Appetite. My bad. But I am pretty sure they were in separate rooms.

This is first part of interview with Slash I'd like to share with you. I translate it from Polish. Apologize for any spelling and grammar mistakes. It's from 14th of July 2010. Slash answer on Polish Internet portal onet.pl questions. Hope you're gonna like it. I will sent a second part as soon as it is possible. Here you are:

..................................................................
When one of the most important guitarists in the rock history realizes his solo album at least it could mean two things: he wants to be reminded or he wants to supprice Fans using new sound. Fortunately, the forming winger of GnR doesn't need to do both. He has been a point of reference for himself for a long time.
"Slash" is unusual album. Fourteen different, but mostly hard rock songs, recorded with the vocal participation of the old guard (Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Lemmy Kilmister), veterans of the middle generation (Chris Cornell, Ian Astbury), and relatively few younger pharyngeal (Kid Rock, Rocco DeLuca, Adam Levine, Andrew Stockdale, Myles Kennedy). The most surprising - positively! - is the participation of Fergie who is associated with the hip hop band Black Eyed Peas. What a dynamite!
Unfortunately, Slash didn't come to Poland but he found time to answer some questions - not only about his solo debut cd which, as he said, he is proud of but about breaking with addictions, life in a blaze of glory, VR future or later collaboration with Fergie also. Of course, there couldn't fail to topic which most of Fans are interested in - Guns 'N Roses. He said that possibly he will visit Poland next year.
...................................................................
How do you feel wearing a uniform of rock icon, regularly ranks at the top 10 of any lisiting on all time guitarist?

Slash: Well, I don't feel that I am. Some people are looking at me like I would be but it's their buisness. I'm a musician, probably pretty good, but certainly not the best one.

Why do you decide to record a solo album only now ?

Slash: I don't know, I've been braced myself up to do that for a long time. Perhaps I had some issues to mature. In addition, I’ve been clean since four years, I don’t take any drugs and I don’t drink. Thus, I’m more productive than in the last ten years.

Without addiction, you play differently?

Slash: First of all, you live differently. I don’t think that I could do things which I do now if I wasn’t sober and clean. I could run wild and took an every bottle of whisky which I found, but other requirements are put in front of member of the band. You can always f@ck up something and waiting for other to be worried about [laughs]. As a solo artist I must be more responsible. This doesn’t mean that I hate my addictions. In some case, I felt very well with them. But you can’t live on the edge for so long.

It was hard for you to quit?

Slash: It’s not easy for sure, but I managed to kill two birds with one stone. When I drank I had to take. When I took I had to drink. Winning one, it automatically got rid of another. And it’s not as heavy as to quit smoking [laughs]. I succeeded last year and my wife finally stop whined that I stink of fags [laughs].

You’re one of the most recognizable faces of the contemporary rock. Have this status ever been uncomfortable for you?

Slash: Well, I dealt with it somehow. I deal with it well now too. I don’t walk outside so often on a tours. When I’m at home in L.A. I’m moving locally and I don’t seek for publicity. Moreover, I don’t have a time to do so, because I have a lot of work to do and I’ve got my wife and two sons at home. And even if someone sometimes recognize me, these are only nice situations.

Show – buisness is also such a nice thing?

Slash: Oh, not always, not always. You’ve got to be very careful and to do many things you need to keep a distance.

To do what things the most?

Slash: For some business aspects of this work, which are usually strongly constrated with the spirit of rock’n’roll.

Craving for money?

Slash: Well, sooner or later, everyone will want to earn money on you. While I was working on that cd, I managed to keep happiness out of it and keep independence. I could fully concentrate on music and that’s why everything came out so wonderful.

7/28/2010 | 11:44:53 PM by SWOC

Part II:
..................................................................
Recording it you chose a little Carlos Santana or Tony Iommy path – you just invited different vocalist for each song. Where did this idea come from?

Slash: It appeared very naturally. The songs which I wrote had so different faces that they needed other voices. So I sat down and began to wonder what kind of artists would fit perfectly for each one. And after that I was in touch with them and I sent demo version for them. Everyone wrote their own lyrics and had full freedom in pushing forward their ideas on the piece of paper. It was a very simple and enjoyable process.

My guess is that very special value for you have veterans Lemmny, Izzy and Iggy appearance on the album.

Slash: For sure. I called them at the beginning because I know and appreciate them the longest. Those guys are heroes of my youth. I’m happy that they agreed to take part in this mess [laughs].

I was under big impression listening to “Beautiful Dangerous” feat. Fergie who shows that she has a real rock voice. Is there any chance that you will record a long play with her?

Slash: We shall see. She is busy working with Black Eyed Peas and I’m promoting my material. However, I can’t exclude that in the next year, when we will have a little more time, we will discuss some common moves. She actually has a voice which is kicking all asses. This girl is a real treasure.

In almost every interview you’re asked about GnR. Doesn’t that bother you?

Slash: Not really. More irritating from people who asked stupid questions are stupid people and there is no shortage of those around [laughs]. Although, talking about no chances for reunion with me in the band fifty thousand times or so and Axl’s expressions about me which I’m not interested in it’s not the most fascinating activity [laughs].

So do you agree with those Fans who claim that Axl Rose using the GnR name destroys the great legacy of this band?

Slash: I don’t have anything in common with this band anymore, so I don’t want to judge him.

Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the realize of both the “UYI” cds. Would you realize them in such monumental form?

Slash: I don’t think so. If I could, I would choose the best songs from both albums and made one, but deadly. Speaking the truth, I was for such a solution, but because of various reasons, my voice is gone. There is obviously a lot of very good material, which has stood the test of time. Well it’s better that we realized two separate discs separately than if we had to do a double album. We gave people a choice at least.

During the current tour there is also a lot of GnR songs you play. How does it feel to return to them after so many years?

Slash: Well, I played some of them with VR, so it’s not novelty. Those songs are great and having in the band such person like Myles I could afford to tap a little bit deeper. There are only few vocalists who can sing in such registers as Myles, with such a passion and commitment. He copes very well with GnR, Slash’s Snakepit songs and of course with those new ones too.

What is the future of VR after the departure of Scott Weiland?

Slash: We are in abeyance for the moment. Some new material is already done, but we still don’t have a new vocalist. But sty cool ! We will finally find somebody.

SLASH WAS THE BEST GNR GUITARIST AND WILL BE FOREVER,HE BRINGS DOWN ALL THE STUPID GUITARISTS OF NUGNR,THEY ARE BREAKFAST FOR HIM.

LONG LIVE SLASH,THE REAL GUNNER,DONT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THIS GARBAGE NU GNR TRIBUTE HIRED HANDS BAND.

7/29/2010 | 3:01:20 PM by The Real Travis

GO TO HELL -

Maybe back in the day and I'm a GNR fan all the way, but I actually have to say that DJ is the best. I have been watching Slash and you can tell there is something going not right and I don't know how much longer Slash is going to be able to keep going. I read that Slash has said he is in alot of pain on stage from the pace maker he has in his heart and that he feels alot of jolts hitting his pace maker when on stage. He's not going to be able to tolerate that much longer or we'll be saying, Happy Birthday Slash, R.I.P. Slash was found once dead from substance abuse and physically that has brought Slash down alot because the older he gets the harder it is on him. Don't get me wrong, Slash is a legend of his own time way back but the image is what kept people interested.

7/29/2010 | 3:13:12 PM by GO TO HELL

Opinions are opinions dude, let me prefer slash for many reasons, slash was and will be for ever the original and the one guitarist of GNR,all the others are just talent guitarists...

As you re saying RIP slash,im answering with the same coin,RIP AXL,a botox faced fat man who dont reminding nothing the old good Axl Rose.

7/29/2010 | 4:05:07 PM by The Real Travis

You have a closed mind and with your comeback, I must of hit a nerve. I did do some reading on updated material that was mentioned in one of these posts, Slash was hired for the third line up when Tracii and Rob left from not wanting to go to a gig Duff had booked for Guns N' Roses then after they did a gig with Duff being in the 2nd line up as Guns N' Roses. Slash may be an okay guitartist, he is over rated, Zakk Wylde had Slash creamed but as a person, Slash really sucks and as long as I have been a Guns N' Roses fan, I can't find anything Slash says to be honest.

7/29/2010 | 5:13:05 PM by The Real Travis

Maybe I was sick of the downers about Slash at first until I finally got a slap in the face with reality. Wgen Slash was hired for the 3rd line up, Duff and Izzy were very lury about Slash being hired in the first palce and back then there must of been a reason and now I know why. Axl hired Slash without Izzy's and Duff's real okay about because they couldn't find anyone else ASAP to get to the next gig after Tracii and Rob left and lury about Steven even more than Slash. Slash went from having his own band when he wanted Axl to be frontman for Road Crew and Slash was going to quit Gn'R after the Lies album but Axl didn't want to go through changes again and Slash would only stay as long aas he was paid more than Izzy and it was okay'd by the management, not Axl. I'm sorry but I can not look to a guitarist like Slash knowing he didn't want to be in the band after the Lies album came out. It was about money for his substance abuse, not the band.

7/29/2010 | 5:29:46 PM by The Real Travis

If Slash would be a man and admitt that alot of the late starts on stage was because of him being so wasted he couldn't perform and it took the band all they had to get Slash sobbered up and when he was able to go on stage, Slash would go behind a speaker and throw up.Yes, there were late starts because of Axl and also because of Duff's illness and there were concerts cancelled because of Axl's throat, Slash was too wasted and Duff was ill. There was even a concert cancelled because Matt was ill. Axl is always blamed for Gn'R breaking up back then when it had been said they were falling apart before they got started and Duff has an article on here that it was the ouside forces that destroied their intenal alliance. It's all the lies Slash has said that makes me turn my head and look the other way.

7/29/2010 | 5:53:07 PM by Silly

The Real Travis' posts are silly. He is just making this up.

DJ Ashba the best guitarist? How did he reach that conclusion? The guy hasn't written a note for GNR? He playing Slash and Buckethead's parts. The guy is a filler, another replacement.

The notion that shows started late because of Slash is nonsense. Entirely fabricated.

Travis just makes up these accounts and version. But there is no basis in reality.

7/29/2010 | 5:54:05 PM by GO TO HELL

You are Slash hater so i cant take your opinion as objective.

I know that if theres one guitarist that GNR owes a big percent of their success this guitarist called slash, and without him in the line up its just another coverband like so many others.

So if you wanna believe that slash sucks, slash is overrated, slash nowdays cant play this stuff good and bff, fortus, ashba doing it better its your right dude.

The reality says GNR without slash they are something different.

7/29/2010 | 6:45:00 PM by The Real Travis

DJ joined Guns N' Roses a year ago and is doing the Chi-Dem toruing he he is fantastic. Would Slash paly this music, hell no cuz he too afraid to and has even comented that when he was doing his solo he was too afraid to listen to it. Paranoid !DJ is not leaving and Guns aren't finished making music yet ! Do you watch any vids of the histories about Guns and material that is out there ! On vids it is stated that for pics to be done of Slash, someone has to stand behind him to hold him up. Slasj is partially standing next to a barrel and someone is holding Slash up. Blooper, you can see the person's shoe. Slash only has two feet not three. I am not fabricating anything. You don't think this stuff I have found out about Slash didn't hit me hard ! I had to face the truth and music !

7/29/2010 | 6:57:49 PM by The Real Travis

GO TO HELL -

You have your opinion and I have mine and Slash is now concsdered a cover band. Opening act ! Guns N' Roses have existed longer witout Slash than with Slash and it's odd to me how Metallica and the Gunner's have got along just fine since Slash left. Metallica wanted to tour with Guns on thier Canadian tour 2009-2010, as Lars said, after what happened in the past if Guns would even consider it.

7/29/2010 | 8:02:02 PM by GO TO HELL

You are wrong,GNR never really existed after the broke up,its other fact that Axl took the rights of the name.

When you will understand that this band you calling today GnR or even NuGnR has nothing to do with real GnR then maybe you realize the difference.

I prefer to listen all the gnr stuff from the hands of the creator not from someone Dj or finck or bbf or whatelse.

7/30/2010 | 10:25:23 PM by Captainbeard

@ Jay - good posts my friend, couldnt agree more.

For the record I recall in Slash's autobiography he talks about some of the AFD songs they wrote together and talks about (from memory) coming back in the back of a van from one of the very earliest gigs and upon approaching LA one of them (think it was Axl) shouts "take me home to the paradise city!" and Slash chips in with "yea, where the grass is green and girls have big titties!" He goes on to mention the other guys suggested "where the grass is green and and the girls are pretty" were decided as a better line by the other guys. Its all in his book though. I also read in a music magazine an interview with Duff where he was quoted as saying he wrote the uplifting intro to paradise city because it reminded him of home when he played / hears it.

7/31/2010 | 2:38:38 AM by AX7

Slash is the best, amazing solos, amazing riffs, without him GNR wouldnt be so great band, his style is still original, the hat,the hair, how he plays,ok now looks a little fat but thats physical, the man grows,he is 45 yo.

I think that even now slash and Axl can make together insane music,i hope one day for UYI part iii.

Yeah bbf,dj,fortus the guys are talented and they are giving their best in the band nowdays....but slash is always slash, nobody can pass him.

7/31/2010 | 10:55:15 AM by SWOC

I think that Slash saying that he is pretty good guitarist but not the best pointed out one major thing - he is one of many in music buisness. So it's clear, if you are on even good level you should expect that your neighbour who is playing guitar as well can be on higher level than you are. In my opinion, there is always a man who can replace the "original" one. And it's only a matter of time to understand it or more complicated thing which depends on your psyche - accustom yourself to another person. As we can see, the second option doesn't work so well and Slash was playing games with GnR Fans when he talk about reunion. He said circa two weeks ago that: "talking about no chances for reunion with me in the band fifty thousand times or so and Axl’s expressions about me which I’m not interested in it’s not the most fascinating activity". So why he did it? Sometimes I don't understand this dude.

7/31/2010 | 9:58:14 PM by AX7

@ SWOC

Yeah he said it that but so what? Its good that he thinks he's not a legend or a super guitarist, the guy knows what he can do.

He's not interesting for reunion cause Axl first dont interesting, thats the fact with slash,he wants a reunion but from the moment Axl dont give a shit then he says he is not interesting too.
